Description

The construction of large ships by France in the 1930s led to some concern that Italian large destroyers would be inferior. Thus, in 1937, work started on the esploratori oceanici (Ocean Scouts). The Scipione Africano joined the Regia Marina force at Taranto and also took part in Operation Scylla. Scipione Africano took part in 15 missions for the Regia Marina but a further 146 on the side of the Allies following the 1943 armistice.
