Description

The French army started WorldWar II as the most powerful armyin the world. Well-equipped, withexcellent tanks and artillery, theinfantry divisions were numerousand confident of fighting off thehated Boche as they had twenty-two years before. This was not thesame war though, and the Frenchinfantrymen found themselves alltoo often fighting off Germanarmoured units which hadoutmanoeuvredthem as theBlitzkrieg rolled across Europe.

It was for the honour of Franceand their regiments that so manyFrenchmen dug in and fought itout against a moretacticallyadvanced foe. Resolutely fighting against the sweeping offensives of the German invaders, the French gavetheir allatbattles such as Hannut, Arra, Boulogne and Saumur.

Manybrave Frenchmen went on to fightagainst the Allies with VichyFrance, ensuring admiration andloathing in equal measure, whilstothers would return to Francewith the Allied invasion in 1944 toreclaim theirhomeland…
