Description

The Leipzig and Nurnberg were improved versions of the K-class, being the only two vessels in the Leipzig-class of light cruisers. During WWII she she performed escort duties for warships in the Baltic and North seas where she and her sister ship, Nrnburg were torpedoed by the Royal Navy S-class submarine, HMS Salmon. Following a period of repair Leipzig became a training ship, providing supporting fire to German land forces during the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. In late 1944, a collision between the Leipzig and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen so severely damaged the Leipzig that the Kriegsmarine decided complete repairs were unfeasible. Patched up to keep her afloat, she helped to defend Gotenhafen from the advancing Red Army in March 1945 before carrying fleeing German civilians, reaching Denmark by late April. She was scuttled in 1946 by the British.
